Halloween is an annual holiday celebrated on October 31 that blends ancient harvest and religious festivals with modern costume and community traditions.

Origins and Significance

• Ancient Roots: Evolved from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off roaming spirits.
• Christian Integration: Later linked to All Hallows' Eve (the evening before All Saints' Day on November 1).
• Cultural Evolution: Transformed through Irish and Scottish immigration into North America, shifting into a community- and child-focused celebration by the mid-20th century.

Common Traditions & Activities

• Trick-or-Treating: Children and families go from house to house collecting candy and treats.
• Costumes and Masks: People dress up as ghosts, monsters, superheroes, and pop-culture figures.
• Jack-o'-Lanterns: Pumpkins are carved with spooky or smiling faces and lit with candles.
• Parties and Decor: Homes and venues feature decorations like fake spiderwebs, skeletons, and seasonal colors like orange and black, with seasonal supply shopping available through major retailers like Walmart and specialty pop-ups like Spirit Halloween.
• Media: Horror classics—such as John Carpenter's 1978 film Halloween (1978) - IMDb—define much of the modern spooky aesthetic.
